You’ve secured the meeting slot. Now what?

Every September, local governments across BC head to UBCM with a list of priorities—and a tight window to get their message across. But without the right preparation, even the most critical issues can get lost in the shuffle.
Here are five things I recommend to ensure your team walks into each Ministerial meeting informed, aligned, and impactful.
1. Clarify Your Asks
Start with no more than three. Ministerial meetings are short, and you want to leave time for dialogue. Be specific about what you’re asking for: funding, policy change, project prioritization, or collaboration.
A clear ask helps Ministers and staff respond, follow up, or advance it internally.
2. Align with Ministry Mandates
Frame your request in terms reflecting current government priorities. If you’re meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, don’t just talk about road conditions—connect it to safety, connectivity, and infrastructure resilience.
Research beforehand by reviewing mandate letters and recent announcements to align with their current goals.
3. Speak as One
Ensure your Council or delegation is aligned. Mixed messages weaken your case. Do a run-through beforehand and confirm who is speaking to which point.
Knowing your roles makes the conversation smoother, focused, and persuasive.
4. Bring the Story, Not Just the Stats
Make your story relatable by connecting it to people, place, and local impact. Keep your brief clear, visual, and community-rooted.
A compelling narrative helps your message stick long after your meeting ends.
5. Practice the Pitch
Even seasoned leaders benefit from coaching. I help Councils, Boards, and staff prepare with messaging support, briefing reviews, and mock Q&As—so your voice is strong and strategic when it matters most.
Confident delivery builds credibility and demonstrates your commitment to desired outcomes.
Whether you're advocating for major funding or raising community concerns, I can help you deliver a message that gets remembered.
